The ceremony was symbolic rather than legal (as same-sex marriage was not legal in the U.S. at the time), but what counts to Katou and Iwaki are the vows they made and their commitment to each other. They are regarded as a married couple by the press and their fans in Japan, and their friends often jokingly refer to them as "husband and wife." Family: Katou has a close and loving relationship with his family. His parents accepted his career as an AV (adult video) actor, and after some brief initial hostility from Katou's father, they accepted Iwaki as Katou's lover and treat him as part of the family. Katou's younger sister, Youko, accepted Iwaki without hesitation, and she and Katou appear to be close, in spite of the usual teasing and bickering between siblings. Youko has a husband, Keita, and a son, Yousuke. And of course, there is Iwaki, Katou's husband and lover. They were rivals in the porn industry, where Katou was fiercely competing with Iwaki--in fact, it was Iwaki who first inspired Katou to become an actor, and he has been obsessed with trying to catch up with Iwaki and surpass him ever since that time. That obsession took on a sexual and romantic element after they had to audition for the Embracing Love movie by having sex with each other, and after they were cast in the roles of the lovers in the TV drama version, they became lovers for real--at Katou's instigation. It took a long time for Katou to convince Iwaki that his feelings were sincere and that he hadn't started their romance just to attract publicity, but now the bond between them is strong and their trust in each other unshakeable. In spite of that trust, Katou is very protective of Iwaki and easily gets jealous whenever another man pays too much attention to Iwaki. He doesn't fear that Iwaki will cheat on him, but worries that people might take advantage of his trusting nature--such as the time that Iwaki's temporary manager, Asano, stayed over at their house while Katou was away, thereby resulting in a media scandal about Iwaki's rumored infidelity. Friends: Katou's best friends are two young actors named Miyasaka Keigo and Onozuka Yuu. These two have a mischievous streak and enjoy teasing Katou about Iwaki, knowing how jealous he is. Their friendship was nearly torn apart when Miyasaka became obsessively infatuated with Iwaki and attempted to assault him. However, thanks to Iwaki's forgiving nature and Onozuka's scheming, they were able to make Miyasaka realize what a terrible thing he had done, and were able to help Miyasaka and Katou reconcile. Occupation: An actor--first in the porn industry, and then as a mainstream actor in TV and movies. Hobbies: Surfing, snowboarding, cooking--at least, he enjoys cooking for his precious Iwaki-san! He also enjoys going out drinking with Miyasaka and Onozuka, although now that he's a "married man," he doesn't go out as much and prefers staying at home with Iwaki. Personality: Katou is impulsive and given to acting without thinking--the kind of guy who follows his heart rather than his head. But he's also very perceptive and a good judge of human nature, as when he senses that Asano is up to no good in Books 4-5 of the Embracing Love (Haru wo Daiteita) manga, and when he later realizes that Iwaki is lashing out at Asano in Book 10 because he doesn't want Yoshizumi to be replaced. He's very possessive and sometimes over-protective of Iwaki, and his jealousy gets him into trouble at times. However, he is also very generous and fair-minded, considering that he is able to forgive Miyasaka and defend Asano even after both men have wronged him (and Iwaki). He is dedicated to his career and cares about acting as a craft, not just as a means to get rich and famous. He wants to continually improve himself as an actor, but Iwaki is the most important thing in his life, even above his career. Basically, he'd do anything for Iwaki, even if Iwaki wouldn't want Katou to make any sacrifices for him. Strengths and flaws: His greatest weakness is probably, as mentioned above, that he's hot-heated and prone to acting without thinking. This nearly ruined his career twice: first when he punched his co-star Kikuchi in Book 2 (for forcing himself on Iwaki), and in Book 7 when he dropped out of a movie he'd committed to in order to pursue the role of Kusaka in Fuyu no Semi. His greatest strength is deep sense of loyalty. It's most evident in his devotion to Iwaki, but he also shows his loyalty to his friends Onozuka and Miyasaka when he is able to accept the latter's apology even after Miyasaka's attempted rape of Iwaki. Recent history: Katou and Iwaki have both enjoyed very successful acting careers, and now want to expand into the production side of the business. It has been their dream to form a professional partnership together, and they are taking their first step in producing a drama CD based on a book by their friend (and the author of Embracing Love), Sawa Nagisa. If the CD is a success, they hope to be able to take the next step and produce a movie version. | |||||||||
